Hilath holds a BA in Mass Communication from the Curtin University of Technology, Australia, graduating in journalism, film and television, public relations, advertising, and multimedia.
Until 2005, Hilath was the Deputy Editor of Haveeru Daily, the leading newspaper in the Maldives, and also The Evening Weekly, the only exclusively English-language magazine in the country. With over ten years of experience in local journalism, Hilath has written for the screen, subtitled and edited films, and published film reviews in local newspapers and magazines.
He also wrote for Malaysia's The Sun newspaper, has a published book, and has written short stories reflecting contemporary urban experiences in Male'. He has also worked as correspondent for the Associated Press, Reuteurs, and Agence France Presse (AFP).
He wrote key English language speeches for the President during his one-year tenure at the President's Office, and is currently Public Relations Manager for the Maldives Surfing Association and advertising firm Business Image Group and its entertainment subsidiary Habeys Pvt Ltd.
Hilath has already worked on written assignments for Unicef, one of which required him to profile a local personality working for that organisation.
Hilath, who has a passion for film, music, writing, photography, art, and graphics and web designing, is currently acting as an agent for local youths who are aspiring in these particular fields, his long-term dream being getting actively and professionally involved in film and documentary making, and ultimately setting up his own production firm under the banner of Killer Productions.
At this moment in time, his full concentration is working towards setting up a national daily newspaper under his editorship and under the proprietorship of Business Image Group.
